Patrick Mahomes’ Week 1 outlook just took another meaningful step forward.

Mahomes said Saturday that he is “extremely confident” he will be ready for Kansas City’s September 14 opener against Denver. He has progressed through training camp without a reported setback after tearing the ACL and LCL in his left knee last December.

For fantasy managers, the biggest issue has never been Mahomes’ talent. It has been how much early-season uncertainty should be built into his draft price. That uncertainty continues to shrink.

Move Mahomes closer to his normal draft value.

There is still some injury risk until he is officially cleared for game action, but the evidence is increasingly pointing toward Mahomes being available from the start of the season rather than requiring an early-season ramp-up.

That also strengthens the Week 1 outlook for Kansas City’s passing offense. The possibility of the Chiefs opening the year without Mahomes should carry considerably less weight in draft decisions today than it did earlier this summer.

Mahomes has already participated throughout Chiefs training camp, but Saturday produced his strongest public statement yet.

He said he feels great, told the broadcast he would play immediately if Andy Reid allowed it, and said he will prepare to play in Kansas City’s preseason finale against Seattle even though that decision remains with Reid and the medical staff.

The Chiefs have remained cautious, which makes sense given the severity of the original knee injury. But Mahomes’ progression has reached the point where the conversation has shifted from whether he can return early in the season to whether Reid will even let him take preseason snaps.

This is exactly what fantasy managers wanted to hear.

Mahomes still has one final hurdle: actually getting cleared and staying setback-free through Week 1. But the risk profile is moving in the right direction quickly.

We are no longer treating an early-season Mahomes absence as the likely scenario. If his current trajectory holds, Kansas City should open the season with its quarterback—and fantasy managers can draft accordingly.
