Detroit’s offensive line takes a meaningful early-season hit with starting center Cade Mays expected to miss roughly 8–10 weeks because of a fractured bone in his wrist.

The Lions signed Mays to a three-year, $25 million contract this offseason to help stabilize the middle of a line already working through changes. Losing him into the beginning of the regular season creates another interior-line question in front of Jared Goff and Jahmyr Gibbs.

This does not change Gibbs’ status as an elite fantasy asset, but it does slightly weaken the offensive environment and adds early-season protection and rushing-efficiency risk.

Do not overreact to Gibbs or Goff individually, but downgrade Detroit’s offensive-line stability until the replacement plan becomes clear.

Monitor who wins the center job and whether Detroit must reshuffle multiple positions to compensate for Mays’ absence.

Lions head coach Dan Campbell confirmed that Cade Mays will miss a “significant period of time” because of a wrist injury and said Mays is expected to return later in the season.

The reported recovery timetable is approximately 8–10 weeks.

Detroit now has to replace the player it brought in this offseason specifically to stabilize center. Juice Scruggs is one option, while the Lions also have other internal combinations available depending on health and how they want to configure their best five offensive linemen.

For fantasy managers, the biggest issue is not one replacement player.

It is continuity.

Detroit remains loaded with offensive talent, but an offense built around Jared Goff, Jahmyr Gibbs and a high-efficiency scoring environment benefits heavily from strong interior protection and reliable run blocking.

Mays’ absence introduces another variable into that equation as Week 1 approaches.

Detroit still has one of the NFL’s most dangerous fantasy environments, so this is not a reason to abandon Lions skill players.

It is a legitimate early-season downgrade to the infrastructure around them.

Gibbs remains a premium fantasy target. Goff remains draftable at the right price.

But Detroit’s offensive-line continuity now deserves more attention than it did before Mays went down.
