The Atlanta quarterback competition can finally begin for real.

Michael Penix Jr. has received full medical clearance to return to 11-on-11 team work as he completes his recovery from the ACL tear that ended his 2025 season. He is scheduled to join full-team periods beginning Monday.

That matters well beyond Penix.

Atlanta has refused to name Tua Tagovailoa its Week 1 starter, and the coaching staff previously acknowledged that it could not fairly evaluate the two quarterbacks while Penix remained restricted to individual and 7-on-7 work.

Now it can.

Do not move Bijan Robinson or Drake London yet. Monitor the quarterback competition closely.

Penix’s clearance increases his chances of winning back the starting job, but medical clearance is not the same thing as winning the competition. Tua has spent camp taking first-team 11-on-11 reps while Penix has been restricted.

The next several practices matter.

For Penix specifically, this is a clear positive. His path to becoming Atlanta’s Week 1 quarterback is now based on performance rather than medical availability.

Penix had been throwing and participating in 7-on-7 periods for months, but Atlanta deliberately kept him out of full-team work while he completed his ACL rehabilitation.

That restriction effectively placed the quarterback competition on hold.

Falcons quarterbacks coach Alex Van Pelt said there was “no competition” until both quarterbacks could be evaluated at the same level. Penix has now crossed that medical threshold.

Tua may still have the advantage after receiving the bulk of Atlanta’s first-team work during camp. But for the first time this summer, Penix has the opportunity to change that on the field.

This is bigger than a medical update.

Atlanta now has a legitimate quarterback decision to make before Week 1.

We are not changing Bijan Robinson or Drake London based on the clearance alone. But Penix returning to 11-on-11 work introduces something Atlanta has not actually had during training camp: a true head-to-head evaluation between its two potential starters.

Now we watch who wins it.
